Hurricane Rick, a “dangerous” system with sustained winds of 205 kilometers (125 miles) an hour, headed for the Baja California peninsula, where the Mexican government issued a hurricane watch. The storm’s winds weakened from 230 kilometers an hour yesterday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said today on its Web site at about 4:30 a.m. Miami time. Two days ago, Rick’s 285 kph winds made it the second-strongest eastern north Pacific hurricane on record, behind 1997’s Linda. The hurricane was located about 615 kilometers south- southwest of Cabo San Lucas, a beach resort at Baja’s southern tip. Rick was moving northwest at 17 kilometers an hour, and forecast to turn toward the north and slow.
“On the forecast track, the center of the hurricane will be nearing southern Baja California by late Tuesday or early Wednesday,” the center said. “Rick is still expected to be a dangerous hurricane as it approaches the southern Baja peninsula.”
Rick is forecast to pass over Baja before slamming into mainland Mexico about a day later. Mexico’s government placed a hurricane watch on Baja California from the southern tip northward to Santa Fe on the west coast and San Evaristo on the east coast.
Rick is currently a Category 3 hurricane on the 5-step Saffir-Simpson scale of intensity. Two days ago, it was a maximum Category 5 storm. The U.S. center forecasts the system’s winds to dip below “major” hurricane status — or below 178 kilometers an hour — while remaining at hurricane strength, with winds of at least 119 kilometers an hour, as it hits Baja.

A spectacular superyacht has been designed by an internationally-renowned urban planning architect in a very unusual shape – a huge sea creature! Seventy-six meter long “Oculus,” which is designed for 12 guests looks like a large sea creature, with one end looking uncannily like the jaw and eye socket of a shark or a killer whale. A second design, the futuristic 91 meter-long “Infinitas” is based on the figure-of-eight shape of an infinity loop. The pair are the brainchild of Kevin Schopfer who felt the design of luxury yachts should move away from the generic boat shapes of most yachts to something more playful. The two awe-inspiring designs, which included inside swimming pools and helipads are still looking for an owner. With a starting price of $140 million for “Infinitas” and $95 million for “Oculus,” they don’t come cheap. But Schopfer stated: “There are several potential clients interested in both “Oculus” and “Infinitas” and discussions are ongoing. And we are also working on several more yachts.”
Schoepfer Yachts was founded in 2008 as a US based company dedicated to the pursuit of advanced yacht aesthetics and technology. Schöpfer Yachts is among a new breed of yacht companies, which will secure strategic alliances with the world’s finest naval architects and shipyards. This strategy will allow the flexibility to explore a wide range of design venues while insuring these designs meet and exceed the highest level of maritime standards. Schoepfer is also pleased to announce that Sparkman and Stephens (New York, Ft. Lauderdale and Newport) will be the naval architect for their first venture, the Oculus. As they enter the next generation of yachting design, Schoepfer offers his design collection to the global yachting community and to prospective owners who share his vision of innovation and excellence.

The USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a retired U.S. Navy warship, embarked on a sedentary new career Wednesday on the floor of the Gulf of Mexico. The decommissioned warship was scuttled in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary between 10:20 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. ET to become the world’s second-largest artificial coral reef. The 17,250-ton ship sank in less than two minutes, said Andy Newman, spokesman for the Florida Keys Tourism Council. It is resting about 140 feet below the surface, but much of its bulk is only 40 to 70 feet below the surface. “It went down like a rock, everything looked very, very smooth.” About 300 boats positioned themselves as close as possible to the site, and cheers went up when the Vandenberg slipped beneath the water seven miles south of Key West, the spokesman said.

Embedded video from CNN Video

Newman, who was circling in a helicopter above the 522-foot-long ship, said the Vandenberg appeared to rest in a level position on the Gulf floor. Divers were to assess its position Wednesday. Authorities said once final assessments of the ship are made, divers can begin exploring. The goal of the $8.6 million project is to divert fishing and diving pressure away from natural reefs, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
