15 years ago a female friend of mine who lives on an island and uses a 16 foot Lund to get to and from her home came to me and asked what I might be able to do to help her get a little more life out of her five-year-old Lund that was leaking badly. I told her that for modest cost ( $500) I would sandblast her hull ( the boat) prime it with vinyl ester resin and then apply approximately 3/16 to 1/8 of an inch of chop to the boat from spray rail to spray rail ( stiff spots on the boat so as to minimize the stress on my terminations) and finish with gelcoat and a utility level of workmanship. I told her that she’d be able to use conventional bottom paints, I suggested that the boat would be faster, and I told her that she would get an additional 5 to 7 years of service from it. I didn’t anticipate how much the ride would suffer, a light aluminum boat like a Lund fluxes quite a lot when it hits a wave and I stiffened the boat substantially yielding quite a different ride.
Well she gave me the work and the boat went back to work as the daily commuter, used up the 30 horse two stroke and was repowered with a 40 hp Mercury four stroke, I think there might have been one other outboard in between those two but I’m not sure.
Now 15 years later the Lund is eight years past any warranty that I would’ve given it, my sons 25 horse Yamaha has taken a dump, and my friend has purchased a new boat for her daily commute and I got in the middle of the transaction between my friend and my son who is now the proud owner of an 1991 16 foot Lund that probably has more abuse than any Lund before it.
Boat, motor, and trailer for $1000
and I don’t see any reason why it won’t go a few more years but it’s a given, when salt water starts getting between the fiberglass and aluminum, it’s days will be numbered
